In 2019, I joined SCS Group’s construction division as a joiner, attracted by their advertised price work rates. However, the reality quickly revealed these rates were far from achievable, a tactic to push workers into accepting significantly lower hourly wages, with mine being £15/hr, alongside a 3% retention fee, further diminishing earnings. Despite the supportive nature of most on-site supervisors. The management, especially QS Stephen Watson, displayed clear signs of narcissism and corporate bullying. My attempts to reclaim my retention were met with dismissive and obstructive responses from Watson, who implied I should provide documentation he was already responsible for, delaying resolution with empty promises of follow-up. The situation escalated when I approached David Ferguson, a director, who condescendingly hinted that my claim might inversely result in a debt to the company. This encounter shed light on a broader culture of exploitation and disrespect towards workers, particularly the self-employed, who are coerced into accepting lower wages without the benefits entitled to them by law. Driven by a need for closure, I visited their office, causing an unwarranted stir. My mere presence led to a confrontational call from Watson, who tried to intimidate me by questioning my knowledge of the company’s ownership, implying connections with influential gangster like figures, before begrudgingly settling my retention partially under the guise of an NDA that presented the payment as a goodwill gesture. This ordeal with SCS Group, characterized by unprofessional conduct and disregard for workers’ rights, underscores a systemic issue within the industry. It’s alarming how such a company continues to secure contracts for significant government projects in Scotland. This situation calls for urgent government intervention or at least for the major companies awarding these contracts to exert more pressure on subcontractors like SCS to ensure fair and ethical treatment of workers. The government’s role should be to safeguard workers’ rights, ensuring that companies engaged in public projects adhere to the highest standards of fairness and professionalism.
