NECS Cleaning

This company quoted to do a deep clean of our premises 400m2 with a warehouse and 2 training rooms, toilets, kitchen and office. They said they would send a team over on a Saturday to do this. We explained that we had carried out an extensive internal fit-out with dust settled everywhere and expected them to bring a team of at least 4 operatives with commercial cleaning equipment. In the event just 2 operatives turned up with a mop and bucket, a few dusters and a jet washer. They were there 5 1/2 hours and carried out a superficial, clean, which is all they could do given the area 2 people could cover. I signed off the work as they were anxious to get back home which was over 70 miles away. I had no complaints against the operatives. They did what they could but there was clearly a no-show or two meaning the ones who did turn up could not possibly provide the deep clean I had ordered for £750 + VAT (there was still dust everywhere after they said they were finished). They were anxious to get home so I signed off the work as satisfactory for what they had done and let them go, otherwise I would have had to keep them there late into the night to achieve the deep clean. I didn't pay immediately as the whole purpose of a deep clean was for an official business launch which took up a lot of my time. Eventually however, I told them that I would pay for what the Co had done which was a basic but not for a deep clean and I paid them £550 + VAT. Rather than accept the reality, they issued a claim through the courts for the amount held back which I decided to settle. I hadn't taken photos and I did sign off the work to let the cleaners go so to oppose the case would have taken up too much time to prove so I settled the the disputed amount. Therefore I actually paid £750 + VAT for a basic clean meaning for 5 1/2 hours work - 9.30 to 3pm, £130 an hour or £65 per hour per cleaner. For what they did, I could have got it done for a 1/5th of the cost. I accept I've paid the price for my lack of diligence but sometimes, you trust that people will provide a fair service for a fair price and willing to adjust the price if they fail to meet the level of service offered. In this case, they definitely did not, but congratulations to them, ... they got away with it!
