Long review: It was getting late after an AA mechanic had sorrowfully shaken his head when I had asked if he carried the battery for my car. A local garage had the same forlorn expression when I enquired and they too, could not help. My last hope was the Wells Halfords so that I could make it to a wedding in Oxford tomorrow (not my own, but imagine it is for the added drama, if that is your thing). I drove up, sending my partner in and expecting a similar response, whilst driving slowly around. She exited and motioned for me to pull into the mechanics bay - Charles could help. In under 30 minutes Charles and his colleague George had not only replaced my old battery but also, my faith in mechanics - with both now at full strength and also at a reasonable price.
Laughable! Took my car in for a headlight bulb replacement. I asked first if it was a service they provided and of course would buy the bulb. Yes they said. Great. Put in my number plate and was told no we don't fit headlight bulbs to your car. A bit surprised, I asked why not? The reply -Because you have to take the bonnet off. I nearly laughed out loud. The bonnet is a small piece of plastic that slides off when you release two little clips. I do it everytime I refill the washer bottle or check the radiator and brake level. Even a five year old could do it. I would have done that for them. And then the 'mechanic' (not sure what to call him) said, oh yeah, I've only done one of them cars in ten years and it took me 45 minutes. I walked out. Didn't even bother to buy the bulb. Went online, bought two quality bulbs (£22 for both), checked an install guide. Bulbs arrived next day, took the bonnet off (took about 20 seconds), fitted two new bulbs with the help of a dentist mirror to see what I was doing. Took about ten minutes to do both. And then fitted the bonnet back in place. Simple. Moral of the story, do it yourself. Find out the bulbs you need. Check online for a guide if there is one and fit it yourself. Save yourself the £11 fitting fee (think it was) so £22 for two bulbs. If they can't even fit a headlight bulb I would not trust them to touch anything else on my car. Ridiculous.
I had only popped in for a quick browse and was served by I think Charles, he was so genuine in his service and recommended me some car air freshener which is the best I’ve ever had. Definitely coming back in for him to help me again!
I had a dash cam fitted today, what a brilliant service, I was kept up to date how long it would take and shown how to use it, nothing was to much trouble for the fitter even though my car proved to be a bit tricky getting some of the panels back on. 100% recommend Halfords, especially the Wells branch, thank you for your patience and a very good job.
From booking in my cycle for a service check, the unforeseen customer adjustments, and tolerance to last minute changes the staff have been excellent throughout. An easy going approach to customer satisfaction has made the Halfords experience a pleasant one.
